Warwick Farm Trackside Market, Sydney, Australia 1 May 2010
The Warwick Farm Trackside Market, Sydney, Australia is a terrific experience for families who enjoy buying fresh produce from farmers and people who bake and cook food. I tasted fresh fruit from farmers stalls, such as unwaxed apples and persimmons. The persimmons that were odd shapes were given away to kids and my sister and I couldn't wait to show our friend Anna our crazy persimmon. There are loads of samples and we gorged ourselves on dumpling samples and samples of cakes. We bought free range eggs to go with the bacon that was from Trunkey Bacon and Pork, farmers who raise their pigs in good conditions. My mum had shown me a horrible video about factory farmed pigs once and we hadn't eaten pig products since then. However, I felt ok knowing that these pigs were looked after better. We came home and cooked bacon and eggs that were served on freshly made bread that my mum had made early in the morning before we left - yum. My sister and I were given money so that we could buy some things and sit at a table and eat. My mum and dad needed us out of their hair. I bought an apple and blackcurrant drink and a freshly baked gingerbread bear. Later on we bought freshly made cupcakes and sat in the carpark eating them. We came home with bags of fresh veges, including things that we hadn't seen before. My mum mistook ginger for a Jeruslalem artichoke but the farmer was helpful and now we have something new to try. This is an advantage of going somewhere like the Warwick Farm Trackside Market, where you can take time to ask questions and try new things. We also came home with the most incredible milk and cream by Country Valley. It tastes so much better than the milk from the supermarket. I recommend the Warwick Farm Trackside Market to people who like fresh produce and believe that it is important to buy directly from the farmers. Even though we like Aldi supermarket alot, the produce of Aldi doesn't come close to the fresh produce at the markets. In addition, we don't usually eat meat because we no longer trust the source of the meat. However, we feel that we can trust the farmers who tell us face to face that their meat is produced in good conditions or is organic. In the end, I smelt the bacon cooking and saw that the colour of some beef that we bought (Marion Plains Pastoral) looks much better than supermarket meat. Tonight my dad is making a chinese dish using the beef. Check out their website www.organicgrower.com.au. The Warwick Farm Trackside Market is open from 8am until midday. They have a website to start your mouth watering from thinking of all of the things that you are going to make! Mum asked us all to pick a recipe this week and buy the produce. I am going to make Neil Perry's pancakes from his book 'Good Food'. Yum. |
